How can I find a reputable company to sell my timeshare through?

I know there are lot of "fly-by-night" companies out there and don’t want to get ripped off. Is there a website that lists the licensed/good companies, maybe lists them with BBB?

First of all, avoid any company that asks for money up front. I bought a time share through a company called Timeshares To Go (www.TimeSharesToGo.com). They charge a flat fee that they collect from the proceeds in escrow and it costs nothing to list your property. They do have some kind of stipulation about what happens if you sell your property through some other means after you have listed it with their site. But, that’s for their protection that you won’t get contacted by someone who saw your property on their site and bypassed their commission.

At first I was a bit concerned about living in California, buying a timeshare in Hawaii, from a couple in Michigan, through a company in Florida. I mean, if something went wrong, whose laws were applicable? But, the deal went through without a hitch and I was very happy with this company.

Check out their FAQ page. They describe all the things timeshare listing people do to try to rip you off. It’s very informative. And, I think you’ll be very satisfied with them.

That is a problem. Most of the "companies" want a sizeable amount of money upfront to "sell" the timeshare and of course, they never do. We found the easiest way to sell timeshare space is to do it on location. Many people are interested but not in spending the higher fees to do so. We picked up 19 years in Mexico for $5000 and got our use out of it but couldn’t sell it. We would never get involved in a timeshare again for this reason. Some people have tried listing them on their own online but I can’t speak to the success of that as we did not try it. We finally just gave it back to holder. We didn’t profit but we unloaded it and ceased the exhorbitant maintenance fees.

You might want to take a look at Timesharing Today. They have a list of resales company in the magazine.

But depending on what timeshare you own, it may be very difficult to sell. The timeshare resale market is flooded with sellers and only a handful of buyers, that’s because timeshare contracts are mainly liabilities that really are not attached to any real assets.

If you want to sell, just be prepared for a long process.

If there is a mail box or a community bulletin board at your home resort, you can put a “For sale” sign. This will pressure the developer specially if they sell it for $20,000 USD and you offer it for $5,000. Sometimes on the fine print of some sale agreements says that the developer has the first right to buy if your place is ever sold. I have heard of developers paying the money (as long as is not too much) just to take the sign out.

To resale or rent a timeshare is a hard task, the basic rule is not to pay money up-front, don’t be another victim of a scam.

Unfortunately over 50% of people that really need to sell their timeshare falls for this resale scams where they charge money upfront and less than 10% of them use their only real option which is to post it or offer it trough free advertising options as much, and as many sites as they can (it is ok to pay a few dollars to post in a great place but no more that $20 to $30).

Timeshares do not have resale value and in most situations you would take a loss in what you paid for, as they resale for less than $2000 USD.

There are some free classified ads where you can start posting:
